Motorcycle Cannonball Update Day 11: Jackson Hole, Wy to Mountain Home, Idaho

At 10:15am Eastern, Sept 19, Matt says:

“The bike is beginning to look a bit different from when we left New York.  The back fender hinge is welded, the coil is now from a Shovelhead and we have a wet cell lawn mower battery strapped to the luggage rack, cables taped along the frame! Oh, and there’s the new big plastic gas can, which I’ve used twice! But it’s all working and the bike is running great.”

“I must have picked up a rock or something to break the final drive chain yesterday. One link plate was snapped right in half, which is tough to do. I am carrying a spare primary and final so could fix it on the roadside. I got into Mountain home with minutes to spare in spite of the breakdown.”

“It’s great to have the three BMWs on the ride. They’re so neat with both tubular and pressed steel frames. Joe Gimpel is is still running well but the other two bikes have, unfortunately been having some problems.”

Chris Knoop from Australia, riding the Invincible has probably had some of the most serious problems, even after pulling off the sidecar. He was down yesterday with a cracked head, but he’s spent so much to be here he has worked really hard to keep the bike on the road. They fixed a broken clutch basket, fragged transmission and yesterday brazed a crack between valve seats and got the bike back on the road.”

“The terrain has been wild here, with all the volcanic rock and craters and everything, but forest fires in the area have made it smokey, cut visibility.”

“People have really been enjoying getting a t-shirt from the Cannonball. George has been awesome to me, really helping out a lot with bike repairs and all. Great guy.”

“We are off to Burns, Oregon today. The ride is still fun and people are more relaxed than at the start, it’s less hectic.”
